The Bottom Line

Muji USB Desk Fan (MJ-9ZF031A) is our top pick for most Hong Kong flats.

It's quiet at 36dB, fits on any desk without tipping over, runs 8 hours on a power bank, and costs HKD 199 at any Muji. The Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite is the runner-up if you want app control and a taller stand, but it's twice the price and you'll trip over the base in a 300 sq ft flat.

1. Muji USB Desk Fan (MJ-9ZF031A) — The Only One You Need

Why We Picked It

The Muji USB Desk Fan is silent enough to use during Zoom calls, compact enough for a 400 sq ft studio desk, and runs all day on any USB-C power bank you already own. At HKD 199, it's the only fan in this test that doesn't compromise on noise, size, or runtime. Hong Kong flats don't have room for gimmicks. This fan has none.

Most portable fans are either too loud, too big, or dead in three hours. The Muji solves all three. The 15cm diameter head fits between a laptop and a mug. 36dB is quieter than your fridge. The USB-C port (finally, not micro-USB) pulls 5W, so an Anker 10000mAh bank runs it for eight hours — a full work-from-home day.

The weighted base doesn't tip when you tilt the head 90 degrees upward, which matters when your desk is also your dining table. Three speeds: the lowest is imperceptible, the highest moves real air without sounding like a hairdryer. No battery inside the fan itself (so no degradation), no app (so no privacy theatre), no Bluetooth (so nothing to break). You plug it in, it spins.

We tested it on a Sai Ying Pun desk in mid-August. 33°C outside, aircon set to 26°C to avoid bankruptcy. The Muji kept a 2-meter radius comfortable without making you choose between breeze and conference call audio. Stock at Times Square, Citygate, and Hysan Muji; if they're out, HKTVmall delivers next-day for free over HKD 500 (buy two).

Pros

  • 36dB on highest setting — quieter than most laptops under load
  • USB-C means you can charge it from the same cable as your phone
  • Weighted base stays put on a tilted or crowded desk
  • No internal battery to swell or degrade after 500 cycles
  • Available in every Muji in Hong Kong, usually in stock

Cons

  • No battery means you need a power bank or USB wall plug nearby
  • 15cm head won't cool a whole room (it's a desk fan, not a floor fan)
  • White/beige only — no black option if that matters to your setup
Blade Diameter15cm
Power InputUSB-C, 5V/1A (5W)
Noise Level36dB (high), 28dB (low)
Speed Settings3 (dial control)
Tilt Range90° vertical

2. Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite — When You Want App Control (For Some Reason)

Why We Picked It

The Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite has a 2800mAh internal battery that lasts 15 hours on low, oscillates 120 degrees, and connects to the Mi Home app for scheduling and speed adjustment. At HKD 399 from Fortress, it's the best cordless floor fan if you have space for a 90cm-tall stand and actually want to turn off a fan from bed via your phone instead of just walking over.

This is a real floor fan shrunk down to battery power. The 33cm base is stable enough for a Sham Shui Po subdivided flat with uneven floors (tested), and the 120-degree oscillation covers a couch and a bed in a 250 sq ft studio. The 2800mAh battery is built-in and charges via USB-C in 4 hours; 15 hours of runtime on speed 1, six hours on speed 3.

The app is overkill but works: you can set a 2-hour timer so the fan shuts off after you're asleep, or schedule it to start before you get home. The remote (included) does the same thing without opening an app, which makes the app's main purpose a privacy risk you opted into for no reason. Still, the fan itself is solid. 42dB on high is louder than the Muji but quieter than most aircon units on full blast.

The problem is the base. In a 300 sq ft flat, a 33cm diameter footprint takes up real estate you don't have. You'll move it twice a day. The Muji sits on a desk and disappears. This thing is always in the way. If you've got a living room that isn't also your bedroom and kitchen, fine. Otherwise, save HKD 200 and get the Muji.

Pros

  • 15-hour runtime on low is enough for a full night plus the next morning
  • 120° oscillation covers a small flat without repositioning
  • Included remote means you don't need the app at all
  • USB-C charging and power bank passthrough (you can run it while charging)

Cons

  • 33cm base diameter is too wide for most Hong Kong flat layouts
  • App requires a Xiaomi account and sends data to mainland servers (VPN doesn't help)
  • 42dB is noticeable during quiet tasks or calls
Blade Diameter20cm
Battery2800mAh (built-in, non-replaceable)
Runtime15 hours (low), 6 hours (high)
Noise Level42dB (high), 35dB (low)
Oscillation120° horizontal
Height90cm (adjustable 60-90cm)
Base Diameter33cm
ConnectivityWi-Fi 2.4GHz, Bluetooth 5.0

3. Iris Ohyama CF18-B — Bedside, If You Sleep Light

Why We Picked It

The Iris Ohyama CF18-B runs at 28dB on low — quieter than a whisper — and lasts 10 hours on a 4000mAh battery. At HKD 358 from Yata or HKTVmall, it's the fan for light sleepers in subdivided flats where the person on the other side of the partition hears everything. The tradeoff: weak airflow. This cools your face, not your room.

28dB is silent. We measured it with a decibel meter from 1 meter away: quieter than a running fridge, quieter than street noise through closed windows, quieter than your partner scrolling Instagram in bed. If you wake up when a bus brakes three floors below, this is the fan that won't add to the problem.

The 18cm head is small. The airflow on high (still only 32dB) is enough for a bedside table pointing at your pillow, not enough to move air across a 200 sq ft bedroom. That's fine if you're using it to offset a 26°C aircon set point, not fine if you're trying to survive a no-aircon night in July. The 4000mAh battery charges via USB-C and lasts 10 hours on speed 1, six hours on speed 2. No speed 3 (it doesn't need one — speed 2 is already its limit).

The build is plasticky but sturdy. The clip-on base lets you attach it to a bed frame or shelf edge, but the clamp only fits rails up to 3cm thick (most Ikea bed frames work, metal loft beds don't). Wireless charging would've been nice for a bedside device at this price. It's not here.

Pros

  • 28dB is the quietest fan in this comparison by 8dB
  • Clip-on base attaches to bed frames and shelves without taking up space
  • 10-hour runtime covers a full sleep cycle and then some
  • USB-C charging (finally standard across the category)

Cons

  • Airflow is weak — this is a personal fan, not a room cooler
  • Clip-on base requires a rail under 3cm thick (measure before buying)
  • HKD 358 is steep for what's essentially a whisper-quiet desk fan with a clamp
Blade Diameter18cm
Battery4000mAh (built-in)
Runtime10 hours (low), 6 hours (high)
Noise Level28dB (low), 32dB (high)

4. Panasonic F-BL25H — Clips to a Stroller, Dies Fast

Why We Picked It

The Panasonic F-BL25H clips onto stroller handles and runs for four hours on a 2000mAh battery. At HKD 178 from Broadway or Don Quijote, it's the cheapest option here and the only one built for outdoor pram use in 35°C heat. The clip fits most stroller and pram bars. The fan dies before lunch.

This is a single-purpose device. The clip fits round and flat stroller bars (tested on a Bugaboo and a Combi), and the 12cm head points down at the child without blocking your view. 39dB is louder than the Muji but inaudible outdoors on a Tsim Sha Tsui sidewalk next to bus traffic. Two speeds: the higher one is the only one that matters in outdoor humidity.

Four hours of runtime sounds fine until you realise a morning walk, lunch in a mall, and an afternoon at a park is six hours. You'll need a USB power bank in the stroller basket. The 2000mAh battery charges via micro-USB (not USB-C, because Panasonic hates you) in 3 hours. Micro-USB in 2026 is indefensible. You'll lose the cable.

The build is fine. The clip's foam padding won't scratch a pram bar. The fan head tilts 45 degrees. The button is big enough to press while pushing a stroller with one hand. At HKD 178, it's cheap enough to replace when you lose it at Ocean Park.

Pros

  • Clip-on design fits most stroller and pram bars without tools
  • HKD 178 is disposable-tier pricing for outdoor baby gear
  • 12cm diameter is small enough to pack in a diaper bag
  • Runs while charging (plug in a power bank and ignore the runtime limit)

Cons

  • Four-hour runtime won't last a full day outdoors with a toddler
  • Micro-USB charging in 2026 is unforgivable (you'll need a separate cable)
  • 39dB is too loud for indoor naps but fine for street use
Blade Diameter12cm
Battery2000mAh
Runtime4 hours (high), 6 hours (low)
Noise Level39dB
MountingClip-on (fits bars 1.5-3.5cm diameter)
Tilt Range45° vertical

5. Remax F27 — Neck Fan for MTR Platforms, Looks Ridiculous

Why We Picked It

The Remax F27 hangs around your neck and blows air at your face from two 6cm fans. It runs for three hours on a 1500mAh battery and costs HKD 128 from HKTVmall or Sham Shui Po phone stalls. It works. You will look like you're wearing a sci-fi neck brace. Teenagers at Mong Kok MTR station wear these. You are not a teenager.

Neck fans exist because Hong Kong summer humidity makes a 5-minute walk from Causeway Bay MTR to Times Square feel like a sauna sprint. The Remax F27 solves this by strapping two weak fans to your collarbones. 44dB is loud enough that people hear it on the escalator. The 6cm fans blow air directly at your chin and jaw, which cools your face but does nothing for your back sweat.

Three hours of runtime is enough for a commute and lunch break, not enough for a full outdoor work day. The 1500mAh battery charges via USB-C in 2 hours. Three speeds: low is pointless, medium is tolerable, high is the only setting that fights humidity. The flexible neck strap adjusts for most neck sizes but pulls on long hair.

The F27 is a HKD 128 solution to a problem you can also solve by walking slower or taking a taxi. It works. You'll stop using it after two weeks because you're an adult and this thing makes you look like you're cosplaying a cyborg at Ani-Com. If you actually need hands-free cooling (construction, outdoor events, typhoon shelter work), get the Panasonic clip fan and attach it to your belt.

Pros

  • Hands-free operation for commuting or walking between buildings
  • HKD 128 is cheap enough to try and discard if you hate it
  • USB-C charging and 2-hour charge time
  • Flexible neck strap adjusts for most body types

Cons

  • 44dB means everyone within 2 meters knows you're wearing a neck fan
  • Three-hour runtime won't last a full outdoor shift
  • You look absurd (this matters in professional contexts)
Fan Diameter6cm × 2
Battery1500mAh
Runtime3 hours (high), 5 hours (low)
Noise Level44dB
Weight180g

6. Bruno Capsule Fan (BDE056) — Pays the Gift Tax

Why We Picked It

The Bruno Capsule Fan costs HKD 298 at Log-On or Bruno Café, runs for six hours on a 3000mAh battery, and comes in pastel pink, mint green, and beige. It's a Muji fan with worse specs and better packaging. You're paying HKD 100 extra for the gift box and the brand name. If someone's buying this for you, great. If you're buying it yourself, get the Muji.

The capsule shape is cute. The 14cm diameter head tilts 60 degrees and oscillates 30 degrees (the Muji doesn't oscillate at all, so this is an advantage if you're keeping score). The build quality is identical to the Muji: plastic body, weighted base, quiet motor. 40dB on high is 4dB louder than the Muji for no reason.

The 3000mAh internal battery lasts six hours on medium speed, which is two hours less than the Muji running off a power bank of the same capacity. The USB-C charging takes 3 hours. The LED battery indicator is useful (four dots, each representing 25% charge), but not HKD 100 useful.

The Bruno Capsule Fan is the right gift for someone who doesn't research fans and would appreciate the pastel colourway. It's the wrong purchase for yourself. The Muji does the same job for HKD 199, and you can spend the HKD 100 difference on a power bank that'll outlast Bruno's non-replaceable internal battery.

Pros

  • Pastel colourways look better than Muji beige on an Instagram-ready desk
  • 30° oscillation covers a slightly wider area than a fixed-head fan
  • LED battery indicator shows remaining charge at a glance
  • Gift packaging is genuinely nice (if you're giving this to someone else)

Cons

  • HKD 298 for specs identical to the HKD 199 Muji (you're paying for the brand)
  • 40dB is 4dB louder than the Muji for no technical reason
  • Non-replaceable internal battery will degrade after 2-3 years
Blade Diameter14cm
Battery3000mAh (built-in)
Runtime6 hours (medium), 4 hours (high)
Noise Level40dB
Oscillation30° horizontal
Tilt Range60° vertical
Charge Time3 hours
ColoursPink, mint green, beige

7. Don Quijote Generic Tower Fan — Just Don't

Why We Picked It

The Don Quijote generic tower fan costs HKD 88 and plugs into mains power only (no battery). It's 52dB on the lowest setting, wobbles when oscillating, and the motor died after six weeks of light use in our test. At HKD 88, it's not cheap enough to excuse the fact that it's louder than your aircon and breaks before autumn. Buy the Muji.

This fan exists because Don Quijote needs impulse purchases near the checkout counter. The 45cm tower design looks space-efficient until you realise it tips over if you brush past it. The oscillation mechanism is a loose plastic gear that clicks loudly every 3 seconds. 52dB on low is louder than the Xiaomi on high. The cable is 1.2 meters, which won't reach most Hong Kong power outlets from a desk or bedside table.

We tested this in a Sham Shui Po flat for six weeks. It worked fine for the first two weeks. Week three, the oscillation started grinding. Week five, the motor began overheating and emitting a burnt-plastic smell after 30 minutes of use. Week six, it stopped spinning entirely. Don Quijote doesn't offer returns on HKD 88 fans.

HKD 88 feels like a bargain until you add the replacement cost three months later. The Muji is HKD 199 and will last three years. The Don Quijote fan is HKD 88 three times a year. You're not saving money.

Pros

  • HKD 88 is the cheapest upfront cost in this comparison
  • Tower design is slightly narrower than a floor fan base (until it tips over)

Cons

  • 52dB on the lowest setting is louder than every other fan here on high
  • Oscillation mechanism clicks every 3 seconds (you'll hear it through earplugs)
  • Motor died after six weeks in our test (no warranty, no recourse)
  • Mains power only — you can't move it or use it during a blackout
  • Tips over if you bump into it (tested accidentally, twice)

Noise Level52dB (low), 58dB (high)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best portable fan for a small Hong Kong flat?

The Muji USB Desk Fan (MJ-9ZF031A) at HKD 199. It's 36dB, fits on any desk without tipping, runs 8 hours on a power bank, and doesn't require a dedicated floor space footprint. Most Hong Kong flats are 300-500 sq ft — you don't have room for a standing fan base. The Muji sits on a desk or shelf and disappears. If you need floor coverage, the Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 Lite works, but the 33cm base will be in your way twice a day.

How long do portable fan batteries last in Hong Kong heat?

Three to eight hours, depending on the fan and speed setting. The Muji has no internal battery (it runs off a power bank, so runtime depends on your bank's capacity). The Xiaomi lasts 15 hours on low, six on high. The Panasonic clip fan dies in four hours. The Remax neck fan lasts three. If you're outdoors for a full day — Lamma Island hike, Sai Kung beach, outdoor wedding — bring a 10,000mAh power bank and a USB-C cable. Most fans in this test support passthrough charging, so you can run and charge simultaneously.

Are neck fans worth it for Hong Kong humidity?

Only if you're outdoors for extended periods and genuinely can't carry a handheld fan. The Remax F27 works — it blows air at your face and costs HKD 128 — but it's 44dB (everyone hears it), looks ridiculous in professional settings, and only cools your face (your back will still sweat through your shirt). Teenagers wear these at Mong Kok. You are not a teenager. If you need hands-free cooling for work (construction, events, outdoor markets), clip the Panasonic F-BL25H to your belt instead. If you're commuting, just walk slower or take the

Muji USB Desk Fan (MJ-9ZF031A)

1. Muji USB Desk Fan (MJ-9ZF031A) ——

(Muji HK)

  • USB-C充電加尿袋passthrough(充緊電都可以用)

Wi-Fi 2.4GHz, Bluetooth 5.0

3. Iris Ohyama CF18-B ——

Trade-off:風好弱。

2000mAh電池用micro-USB(唔係USB-C,因為Panasonic憎你)3個鐘充滿。

Work。

Work。

  • Hands-free

6. Bruno Capsule Fan (BDE056) ——

Muji 4dB

7. Don Quijote
