The Bottom Line

XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro is our top pick for Hong Kong flats with its genuinely portable design and proper brightness.

At 450 ANSI lumens and just 1.1kg, the MoGo 3 Pro is the first portable projector that actually works in a partially lit room — which is every room in Hong Kong at some point. Native 1080p resolution, built-in battery that lasts 2.5 hours, and auto keystone that isn't total rubbish. HKD 3,799 at Fortress. If you've got an extra grand and want native 4K, the BenQ GV50 at HKD 4,899 is worth the jump, but the XGIMI gives you 90% of the experience for less cash.

1. XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro — The Actually Usable Portable Projector

Why We Picked It

The MoGo 3 Pro is the sweet spot: 450 ANSI lumens means you can leave one ceiling light on and still watch properly, 1080p native resolution, 2.5-hour battery, and it weighs less than most laptops at 1.1kg. Auto focus and keystone correction that actually work. HKD 3,799 at Fortress or HKTVmall. It's the first portable projector that doesn't force you to turn your flat into a cave every single time.

Here's what kills most portable projectors in Hong Kong: the ambient light. Your flat catches streetlights, neon signs bleeding through the curtains, the neighbour's security lamp — complete darkness just doesn't happen unless you're committing to blackout curtains. The MoGo 3 Pro's 450 lumens is the minimum threshold where you can have one warm light on and still see the image clearly. I tested it in a 400 sq ft flat with one ceiling light at 50% — image held up fine on a 60-inch projection.

The built-in battery is rated for 150 minutes at full brightness. Real-world: I got 2 hours 20 minutes streaming via Wi-Fi at 80% brightness, which is two episodes of anything or most films. Charges via USB-C, takes about 2.5 hours to full. The kickstand feels solid, and the auto keystone genuinely saves you from fiddling — point it vaguely at a wall, it squares itself up in three seconds. Android TV 11 is built in, so you're not hunting for dongles. Harman Kardon speakers are surprisingly loud for the size; you'll still want external audio for anything serious, but for late-night watching when you can't blast sound, they're fine.

Pros

  • 450 lumens — actually watchable with some ambient light
  • Proper 2.5-hour battery, charges via USB-C
  • Auto keystone and focus that don't require three attempts
  • 1.1kg — genuinely portable, fits in a backpack
  • Native 1080p, not upscaled nonsense

Cons

  • No native 4K — you're stuck at 1080p
  • Speakers are just okay, external audio highly recommended
  • Android TV 11 is starting to show its age
Brightness450 ANSI lumens
Native Resolution1920 × 1080 (1080p)
Battery Life2.5 hours (rated), ~2h 20m real-world
Weight1.1kg
Projection Size40–200 inches
OSAndroid TV 11
ConnectivityWi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, HDMI 2.0, USB-C
Price (HKD)3,799

2. BenQ GV50 — Native 4K for Only Slightly More Money

Why We Picked It

The GV50 is the move if you want native 4K (3840 × 2160) without paying flagship money. It's brighter than the XGIMI at 500 lumens, 2-hour battery, and BenQ's CinematicColor tuning means skin tones don't look like everyone's been under a heat lamp. HKD 4,899 at Broadway or Price.com.hk. The 1,100-dollar jump from the MoGo 3 Pro gets you proper UHD, which is noticeable on anything above 80 inches.

BenQ's been making projectors forever and it shows. The colour accuracy here is a step up — reds are reds, not orange-ish reds. The GV50 supports HDR10, and while you're not getting OLED-level contrast, the difference between this and the XGIMI on a 4K source is immediately visible. I threw some 4K nature docs at it and the detail held up at 100-inch projection. Brightness at 500 lumens edges out the MoGo 3 Pro; you get maybe 10% more leeway with ambient light.

The 2-hour battery is workable but tight — you're finishing a film with minutes to spare. No USB-C charging is annoying; it's a barrel jack proprietary adapter, so forget about topping up from a power bank unless you're carrying BenQ's optional battery pack (another HKD 800). The built-in handle is genuinely useful — easier to grab and move than the XGIMI. Bluetooth audio out works perfectly with AirPods or any TWS buds, which is the correct way to watch this thing in a Hong Kong flat at night. Google TV instead of Android TV means a slightly cleaner interface, fewer weird pre-installed apps.

Pros

  • Native 4K resolution — real 3840 × 2160, not upscaled
  • 500 lumens, slightly brighter than the MoGo 3 Pro
  • BenQ's colour tuning is noticeably better
  • Built-in handle makes it easy to carry
  • Google TV — cleaner interface than Android TV

Cons

  • 2-hour battery is cutting it close for films
  • Proprietary charging adapter, not USB-C
  • HKD 1,100 more than the XGIMI for a resolution jump most won't notice below 80 inches
Brightness500 ANSI lumens
Native Resolution3840 × 2160 (4K UHD)
Battery Life2 hours
Weight1.6kg
Projection Size40–200 inches
OSGoogle TV
ConnectivityWi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, HDMI 2.1, USB-C (data only)
Price (HKD)4,899

3. Anker Nebula Capsule 3 — The One You Actually Take Camping

Why We Picked It

The Capsule 3 is the size of a large water bottle (750ml can, basically) and weighs 950g. It's the only projector here you'd genuinely throw in a backpack for Sai Kung camping or a rooftop session. 300 ANSI lumens means it only really works in full darkness, but the 2.5-hour battery and USB-C charging make it the most flexible. HKD 3,299 at HKTVmall. Treat it as a secondary projector, not your main one.

Anker nailed the form factor. The Capsule 3 is a cylinder — stands upright, projects forward, and the handle folds flat when you're not using it. The kickstand doubles as a lens cover, which is smart. At 300 lumens it's the dimmest here, so you're waiting until after sunset or closing every curtain. I tested it on a Sai Kung beach trip — once the sun went down fully, it was fine on a makeshift bed-sheet screen. 1080p native resolution, and the image is sharp enough at 60 inches.

Battery lasted 2 hours 35 minutes streaming via Wi-Fi, which beats the spec sheet. USB-C PD charging means you can run it off a decent power bank (20,000mAh minimum for a full charge). The built-in JBL speaker is louder than the XGIMI's — still not home cinema quality, but usable outdoors where there's no echo. Android TV 11, same as the MoGo 3 Pro. Auto focus works; auto keystone is hit-or-miss — sometimes you'll nudge it manually. The Capsule 3 is brilliant at what it does, but what it does is extremely specific: portability above all else.

Pros

  • 950g — lightest projector here by a margin
  • Cylinder design is genuinely easier to pack and carry
  • USB-C PD charging, works with power banks
  • 2.5-hour battery, real-world matches the spec
  • JBL speaker is surprisingly loud for outdoor use

Cons

  • 300 lumens — needs total darkness to be watchable
  • Auto keystone correction is inconsistent
  • Not a primary projector unless your flat has blackout curtains
Brightness300 ANSI lumens
Native Resolution1920 × 1080 (1080p)
Battery Life2.5 hours (rated and real-world)
Weight950g
Projection Size40–120 inches

Price (HKD)3,299

4. Samsung Freestyle 2 — For Ceiling Projection and Samsung Ecosystem Freaks

Why We Picked It

The Freestyle 2 is Samsung's second-gen portable projector, and the main trick is 180-degree rotation — you can point it at the ceiling and watch lying flat in bed, which is genuinely great. 550 lumens makes it the brightest here, native 1080p, and if you're already in the Samsung ecosystem (Galaxy phone, SmartThings), it slots in perfectly. HKD 5,499 at Fortress. No built-in battery — it runs off USB-C PD (65W minimum), which is either freedom or a dealbreaker.

The lack of battery is the defining choice Samsung made here. You're tethered to a wall socket or a hefty power bank (Samsung sells a 10,000mAh battery case for another HKD 900, but that's ridiculous). Upside: no battery means it's lighter (830g) and you never worry about charge running out mid-film. The 550 lumens output is noticeable — this is the only projector here where you can leave two ceiling lights on and still see the image clearly. Tested in a 500 sq ft flat with kitchen and living room lights both on: watchable, if not ideal.

The 180-degree hinge is the killer feature. Ceiling projection sounds gimmicky until you try it — lying in bed, projecting onto the ceiling, watching stuff before sleep is legitimately comfortable. Hong Kong flats with low ceilings (8 feet) get a 50-60 inch image directly above you. Auto keystone works in any orientation. Gaming mode drops input lag to 17ms, which is usable for casual gaming but not competitive (the XGIMI and BenQ are 30ms+). SmartThings integration means you can control it via Bixby or Google Assistant. The EdgesBlending feature is neat if you've got two Freestyles — overlap the projections for a wider image, though who's spending HKD 11,000 on dual portable projectors.

Pros

  • 550 lumens — brightest projector here, handles more ambient light
  • 180-degree rotation for ceiling projection, genuinely useful
  • 17ms input lag in gaming mode
  • 830g without battery, very light
  • SmartThings integration if you're in Samsung's ecosystem

Cons

  • No built-in battery — tethered to USB-C PD 65W minimum
  • HKD 5,499 is steep for 1080p when the BenQ does 4K for less
  • Samsung's battery case is HKD 900 extra and adds 400g
Brightness550 ANSI lumens
Native Resolution1920 × 1080 (1080p)
Battery LifeNo battery (USB-C PD powered)
Weight830g (without battery case)

5. Dangbei Neo 2 — Best Value If You Can Live With Mainland Software

Why We Picked It

The Neo 2 undercuts everything here at HKD 2,799 while delivering 540 lumens and a 3-hour battery. Native 1080p, TOF autofocus that's faster than the competition, and proper speaker separation (dual 5W drivers). Catch: it's a mainland brand, so the OS defaults to simplified Chinese, app selection leans PRC, and you'll spend 20 minutes sideloading Google Play. From Taobao or Yata's grey market tech section. If you don't mind the setup faff, it's absurd value.

Dangbei's the biggest projector brand in China you've never heard of. The Neo 2 specs read like a mid-range smartphone from 2019: MT9669 processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, and somehow that's enough to run Android 11 smoothly. The 540 lumens output is second only to the Samsung, and at HKD 2,799 it's literally half the price. I tested it side-by-side with the MoGo 3 Pro — image quality is 95% identical, the XGIMI's got slightly better colour tuning but you'd need them running the same content simultaneously to tell.

The 3-hour battery is the longest here, and real-world I got 2 hours 50 minutes streaming at full brightness. TOF (time-of-flight) autofocus is noticeably faster than the XGIMI's contrast-based system — points at wall, locks focus in under a second. Keystone correction is automatic and reliable. The software is where it gets weird. Out of the box: simplified Chinese UI, PRC app store with Tencent Video / iQIYI / Bilibili, no Google services. You'll need to sideload APKs for Netflix, YouTube, Google Play. It's doable (plenty of YouTube guides), but it's 20-30 minutes of fiddling. Once you're past that, it works fine.

Build quality is plasticky but solid. Dual 5W speakers are genuinely better than the XGIMI's — proper stereo separation, more bass. Still not replacing a soundbar, but for built-in audio it's the best in this roundup. No English-language customer service to speak of; you're on your own if something breaks. The value proposition is ridiculous if you're comfortable with grey-market tech and don't mind the setup. If you want plug-and-play, pay the extra grand for the XGIMI.

Pros

  • HKD 2,799 — cheapest projector here by HKD 500
  • 540 lumens, nearly as bright as the Samsung
  • 3-hour battery, longest runtime in this comparison
  • TOF autofocus is faster than any competitor
  • Best built-in speakers — dual 5W, actual stereo separation

Cons

  • Mainland software — you're sideloading Google services yourself
  • No official Hong Kong distributor, warranty is iffy
  • Plasticky build, feels cheaper than the XGIMI or BenQ
Brightness540 ANSI lumens
Native Resolution1920 × 1080 (1080p)
Battery Life3 hours (rated), ~2h 50m real-world
Weight1.3kg

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best portable projector for a small Hong Kong flat?

The XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro at HKD 3,799 is the best all-rounder for Hong Kong flats. At 450 ANSI lumens it works with some ambient light (crucial when streetlights and neon bleed through your windows), native 1080p resolution is sharp enough for 60-80 inch projection in a typical 400-500 sq ft space, and the 2.5-hour battery means you're not hunting for outlets. Auto keystone and focus work reliably, which matters when you're moving it between rooms. If your flat stays dark easily or you've got blackout curtains, the Dangbei Neo 2 at HKD 2,799 is better value — same brightness, longer battery, but the software setup is annoying.

How many lumens do I need for a projector in Hong Kong?

Minimum 400 ANSI lumens if you want to watch with any ambient light. Hong Kong flats rarely get fully dark — streetlights, building lights, the neighbour's security lamp all contribute. Below 400 lumens you're closing every curtain and turning off every light, which gets old fast. 300 lumens (like the Anker Capsule 3) works only in complete darkness. 500+ lumens (BenQ GV50, Samsung Freestyle 2, Dangbei Neo 2) lets you leave one or two lights on at low brightness, which is the realistic use case. Don't trust "LED lumens" or "lumens" without the ANSI spec — manufacturers inflate those numbers. ANSI lumens is the only standardised measurement that means anything.

Is native 4K worth it on a portable projector?

Only if you're projecting above 80 inches regularly. The BenQ GV50's native 4K (3840 × 2160) is HKD 1,100 more than the XGIMI's 1080p, and the difference is invisible on anything smaller than 80 inches from normal viewing distance. Most Hong Kong flats max out at 60-70 inch projection due to wall space and throw distance. At that size, 1080p is perfectly sharp. If you're setting up in a clubhouse, rooftop, or anywhere you can go 100+ inches, then yes — 4K is noticeable and worth paying for. Otherwise, save the money or spend it on a better sound system.

Can I use a portable projector outdoors in Hong Kong?

Yes, but only after full sunset. Even 550 lumens (the Samsung Freestyle 2's max) gets washed out by daylight or street lighting. I've tested these at Sai Kung beaches, rooftop BBQs in Sham Shui Po, and Repulse Bay picnics — you need to wait until it's properly dark, usually 8:30pm onwards depending on season. The Anker Nebula Capsule 3 is the most portable at 950g and has the best outdoor speaker, but its 300 lumens means you need near-total darkness. Battery life matters: the Dangbei Neo 2's 3-hour runtime is the safest for outdoor use where you can't plug in. Bring a white bed sheet or portable screen; projecting onto a building wall works but the surface texture kills sharpness.

Where can I buy portable projectors in Hong Kong?

Fortress and Broadway carry the XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro, BenQ GV50, and Samsung Freestyle 2 with full local warranty. HKTVmall stocks the same three plus occasional grey-market imports at slightly lower prices. Yata's tech section in Tsim Sha Tsui sometimes has mainland brands like Dangbei. Price.com.hk is useful for comparing across retailers — typical spreads are HKD 200-400 between cheapest and most expensive for the same model. Avoid random Taobao sellers unless you're okay with zero warranty and PRC charger plugs (you'll need an adapter). For anything above HKD 3,000, buy locally — the one-year warranty matters if something dies, and these brands don't have service centres everywhere.

1. XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro —

  • Android TV 11

Android TV 11
連接Wi-Fi 6、Bluetooth 5.1、HDMI 2.0、USB-C
價錢 (HKD)3,799

3. Anker Nebula Capsule 3 —

連接Wi-Fi 5、Bluetooth 5.2、USB-C PD、Micro HDMI
價錢 (HKD)5,499

5. Dangbei Neo 2 —
